Barbados is the where this journey began! Rum making in Barbados has a long and distinguished
tradition, the word rum originating here, probably
coined in the waterfront taverns of Bridgetown, where life
was always rumbustious".
This journey takes you though the lush countryside filled with acres of sugar cane fields and makes a brief photo stop at the Sugar Factory before we make our first stop at St. Nicholas Abbey, an exquisite plantation that makes various products from this sugar cane. Here you will be taken on an interesting and captivating guided tour showing the process of turning this sugar cane into Rum.
From here we continue to Mount
Gay which claims to be the oldest rum in the
world. The 45-minute tour begins
with a short audio-visual on the history of rum, a guided
tour of the distillery, seeing the ancient art of barrel
making and the highlight of the tour - sampling of the product!
Mount Gay Rum has long been associated with international
sailing events worldwide and is the islands leading exporter of rum,
enjoyed in more than 70 countries. At the bar, the bartender
ensures a memorable visit.
We will then take you to a typical Barbadian rum shop to enjoy a refreshing rum punch 'bajan style' - a perfect end to the Journey of Rum!
As the joke goes..."when the Spanish came to this island they looked around and thought 'all we need here is a BAR, a BAY, and DOS shots of rum!' - and that's how Barbados got its name" |
