Harrisons
Cave is a magnificent natural phenomenon and is undoubtedly
one of the most spectacular attractions is the entire Caribbean.
Though created over the course of hundreds of thousands
of years, Harrisons Cave has only been accessible
to the general public in recent times. As the driver pulls
away in the electric tram, your guide will commence the
commentary and you are on your way to a memorable experience
- magnificent chambers, incredible stalactites and stalagmites,
bubbling streams, tumbling cascades, plunging waterfalls
and emerald pools. Throughout the nearly one mile long cave
the walls glisten in the lights as the calcite laden water
drips down from the roof. Passengers have the opportunity
to disembark the tram at the lowest part of the cave.
The journey to the cave is along the picturesque west coast of the island,
turning inland at Lascelles Hill, just past the Holetown
monument, commemorating the site of the landing of the first
settlers to the island in 1627.
The
return trip from the cave is down scenic Shop Hill with
a beautiful view of the south coast and the port, President
Kennedy Drive and the recently refurbished and upgraded
Pelican Village where some of the best local craft available
on the island may be found.
