Mount
Gay claims to be the oldest rum in the
world. Rum making in Barbados has a long and distinguished
tradition, the word rum originating here, probably
coined in the waterfront taverns of Bridgetown, where life
was always rumbustious. The 45-minute tour begins
with a short audio-visual on the history of rum, a guided
tour of the distillery, seeing the ancient art of barrel
making and the highlight of the tour - sampling of the product!
Mount Gay Rum has long been associated with international
sailing events
worldwide and is the islands leading exporter of rum,
enjoyed in more than 70 countries. At the bar, the bartender
ensures a memorable visit.
From
the oldest to the one of the newest and most modern rum distillery
in the world, the visit begins with a self-guided tour of
the state of the art Rum Factory, opened in 1996. An Adjoining
Heritage Park showcases Barbadian skills and talent, featuring
the Art Foundry Gallery and an array of shops with exclusively
locally made products. Enjoy a refreshing, complimentary
rum/fruit punch at the bar and relax a while before returning
via the scenic south coast Oistins and Bridgetown.
